Happy Friday, friends! We’re quickly closing in on two whole months in South Korea, and it’s kind of surreal. Ryan and I were talking about it the other day, and I think the reason it doesn’t feel like we’re quite home yet is simply because our furniture – our household goods – aren’t here yet. With any luck though, that will change soon, and we’re quickly diving into our new life and routine next week. It’s time for some wins for the week again because, even if it doesn’t quite feel quite like home, we’re getting there slowly but surely.
Wins for the Week
1 // We sold our home in New York
This is probably by far our biggest win for the week! We closed last Friday in the US, which means we found out on Saturday that everything went smoothly, and the house officially has new owners. We loved that little home at Fort Drum, but we’re so glad not to have a mortgage payment or have to be landlords anymore. It’s freeing.
2 // Ryan and I wrapped a week of Korean classes (so did the kids)
We started the boys’ Korean classes last week, and Ryan and I started our Zoom Hangeul classes this week. Honestly, I didn’t expect too much from our classes. I hoped it be able to identify a few things, but I didn’t expect much. I got way more than I bargained for. I can identify road signs now, and I can phonetically sound out words (albeit very slowly). I’m stoked to keep working on it! The boys had their second Korean class, too, and they’re doing really well!
3 // Our household goods are officially on the peninsula
We’ve been waiting, and waiting, and waiting for this day. After obnoxiously emailing the entire company demanding an update last week, we found out two days ago that our household goods are finally in Korea awaiting customs inspection. From there, they’ll be transported this way, and a delivery date will be scheduled. Please pray for sooner than later!
4 // Mieke got a modeling job
I find it so funny and interesting, but our kids are truly a rarity here, and their blonde and red hair makes them a hot commodity. We’ve agreed to let each of our kiddos try it if they want, and Mieke will have her first modeling job this coming week. I’m interested to see how she does because she’s spicy.
5 // We met the boys’ teachers at their new school
Spencer starts first grade next week, and we did our meet and greet with their new teachers today! They’re both a little apprehensive, but I think they’ll settle in quite quickly once things get moving. Porter will start Kindergarten one week after Spencer and, just like that, I’ll have my days for work and real life again. What is this real life I speak of?!
I feel like our wins for the week kind of solidify where we are in the mix of all the things right now. We’re settled but we’re not. We’re here but we’re not quite at home. We’re loving it but something’s missing. As our furniture arrives, we make our little apartment a home, and we settle into our new routine, I’m eager to see how much more we learn to love our new host country because, even with all the challenges, Korea has been so good to us thus far.
Tell me – what are some of your wins for the week?
