Well, friends, as of about 10 AM today, we officially have internet in our new home, and your girl is back in business. Truth be told, I’ve missed this little space. It centers me. It helps me keep all my thoughts focused, and it keeps all those memories clear. We’ve done so much in the past month in a half, and it’s hard to make sense of the fact that we literally did it all in that timeframe. Yet, here we are. It’s August in Alaska, and we’re hopping on our first round of Currently, sharing a little bit of life right now in five little prompts. Ready?
Currently: August in Alaska
Loving // I’m absolutely loving not having to pack up my suitcase and move to a new hotel right now! We signed for our house on Fort Wainwright this past Friday, and now we’re just living out of suitcases, sleeping on air mattresses, and borrowing kitchenware from the lending closet until our household goods, UAB, and longterm storage show up. We were quoted an October delivery for our household goods, which is absolutely abysmal, but I’m hoping against hope that things move a little quicker.
Looking Forward to // I’m looking forward to jumping into year two of homeschooling the boys – and this time, Mieke will be home, too! It deserves a post of its own, but Alaska offers homeschool allotments through certain “charters.” We began the enrollment process today, and assuming we’re approved, that allocates funds for each of our kids to receive funding from the state of Alaska to homeschool (including a nominal amount for Mieke). We were flying by the seat of our pants with year one…we’re hoping year two goes more smoothly!
Starting // I’m starting to accept sessions for my photography business here in Alaska! I’m the process of getting my Alaska business license, so getting that going again has been so fun. I’m also starting to really dive into making this house a home…you know, without furniture…because yolo.
Thinking // We’ve been thinking a lot about how crazy military life is lately, but mostly, we’ve been thinking about what incredible opportunities we have. Moving to Alaska is a dream. Moving to South Korea was an incredible adventure – and one we miss dearly. We’re so lucky to have the opportunity to discover and experience different areas of the country – and the world – to find where we want to put down roots. Could Alaska be that for us? Who knows.
Wearing // Ha. Joke’s on you! Or us. Or both of us? 99% of our clothing is in our UAB (unaccompanied baggage) shipment, which is currently MIA. This is the shipment that’s supposed to arrive first because it has the most important things like kitchenware, clothing, my full work setup, etc. But nope. MIA. So, until then, we’re wearing the same 8-10 outfits on repeat. Good thing it’s still hot in Alaska.
I have so many things to share from our trip on the AlCan Highway, our first days in Alaska, some of our camping experiences and more, but those will come. Soon. Eventually. Little by little, we’ll find our footing, and I’ll share all the things. Until then though, it’s August in Alaska, and we’re home.
