Y’all. I’m digging deep into the archives for this post. One of my biggest goals for the past six months was to really clean up my blog, recategorize things that were messed up, and recounts bits of travel that I may have missed before. And yes, I absolutely missed the ball on sharing our review of Truth Coffee Roasting in Cape Town, South Africa. The last time we were in South Africa to visit family was December of 2019 – right before the pandemic shut the world down. So much has changed since then, including the passing of my Uncle and Auntie, whom we usually visited. One thing hasn’t changed though; Truth Coffee is legit.
All About Truth Coffee Cape Town
I don’t think it’s a secret that Ryan and I are not-so-low-key foodies. Remember when we spent an exorbitant amount of money at La Maison 1888 in Vietnam? Well, our trip to South Africa was no exception, and we love a good coffee. So, whilst in Cape Town, we stumbled about Truth Coffee Roasting.
In their own words, “Truth Coffee Roasting specialises in selecting and roasting the world’s most exclusive coffees.” Having been voted the world’s best coffee shop by the Daily Telegraph for two years in a row, it’s safe to say that they’ve become a household name for many, offering a unique taste and flair on traditional coffees.
Visiting the Steampunk Truth Cafe
Located in the heart of District Six of Cape Town, Truth Coffee Roasting’s Steampunk Cafe was such a unique surprise for all of us. When we went, it was crowded, and we weren’t sure we’d get a seat. Both times, however (because yes, we always go extra), we got a great booth that perfectly accommodated our little party of six because our nephew was traveling with us.
The Steampunk Truth Cafe is all centered around a magnificent bar area and a massive vintage coffee roaster, perfectly accompanied with exposed beams, pipes, and all the steampunk decor that you could possibly imagine. Offering in-house dining, as well as take-away treats and pastries, it’s a totally unique experience for all ages. And I can honestly say that because Mieke was 8 months old at the time, Porter was 3, and Spencer had just turned 5.
The Truth Coffee Roasting Menu
It’s no secret why Truth Coffee was hailed as some of the best coffee in all of South Africa by Conde Nast Traveler. Their menu has something for everyone. The boys were perfectly content to drink hot chocolates and nom on pain au chocolat. We, on the other hand, indulged in everything. Ryan was a big fan of their signature D.D.T. – Deep, Dark & Twisted – which is an espresso that, shockingly, has little-to-no bite or acidity. My drink of choice? The Albumen Airship, which is a “Truth” shot blended with egg white and condensed milk. Truthfully (see what I did there?!) though, you can’t go wrong.
The food is equally spectacular. You can’t go wrong with The Underbelly, which is slow-braised pork belly and two poached eggs on sourdough. My favorite had to have been the Brunch Burger. No matter what you choose though, you can’t go wrong. It’s rich, flavorful, and filling – all the things you want from a great brunch/lunch spot.
