After the fog of Covid, I feel like I lost our entire first week of 2024, but here I am…finally on the other side of it and feeling almost completely better today! I went for my first run in a week at just two miles, and it was a balmy 19F, which made it the perfect day to get back out there. Honestly, as crappy as Covid was, I’m glad I got it when I did because it forced us to slow down and really just relax through this last proper week of winter break. We’re back to homeschooling today, and Ryan’s back to work, so it’s time to dive into this month’s version of Currently: January in Alaska, sharing what we’re loving, resolving, looking forward to, doing to stay cozy this winter, and cooking.

Currently: January in Alaska

Loving // I am absolutely loving my cold winter running gear right now – especially my Turtle Far shellaclavas and the Icebugs I got on Facebook marketplace! I shared about Icebugs in my extreme cold weather running gear post, but I couldn’t justify buying them new. I found these for $40. They retail for about $270, so I’m so excited for them.

Resolving // Lately, I’ve been working and resolving to take some of that self-induced pressure off in our homeschooling routine. After so many years of in-school learning, it’s hard to unlearn some things. I find myself putting so much pressure on waking the kids up early, absolutely needing to finish certain things in certain self-made timelines, etc. The whole point of homeschooling was to take the pressure off and really enjoy learning together, so I’m working to be better at not doing those things in this new year.

Looking Forward to // Ryan surprised me about a month ago saying he wanted me to get away by myself. I’ve been so burned out and missing Korea so much that I’ve felt like I’ve been drowning for quite some time. So, he booked me a ticket this coming weekend to see my friend Maribel in Washington! I’m heading to Seattle for a few days on my first solo mom trip…ever. I’ve literally never spent a night away from Mieke, so I’m so excited for this!

Doing to Stay Cozy This Winter // I always laughed at people who tackle insane puzzles, but I’ve discovered that since moving to Alaska, we are those people. Ryan and I are on our second 1,000-piece puzzle, and we’re hoping to start our third one this week. Like, what? Who are we?!

Cooking // I didn’t do a lot of cooking this past week. It’s not often that I’m completely down for the count, but I was absolutely destroyed by Covid, and I couldn’t even get out of bed for much of Thursday. Besides that though, I’ve been on a big soup kick lately, and avoglomeno and  zuppa toscana have been on heavy rotation.

We were warned by locals that January in Alaska – and February – tend to be the hardest and longest months. While, yes, we’re gaining daylight again, it tends to be bitterly cold, and you start craving spring which, for all intents and purposes, is still along way off. We’re hoping to stay busy and keep trucking along through these winter months though as we gear up for more TDYs on Ryan’s part, more training for the boys’ next competition, and plenty of cozy home time.

Tell me – what are you loving, resolving, looking forward to, doing to stay cozy this winter, and cooking this month?
