I think it’s safe to say that I’ll never do these “Currently” posts by the first Wednesday of the month. We’ve been busy, busy, busy, and between working hard to finish up our second year of homeschooling, enjoying the revolving door of “spring” here in Alaska, and staying busy whilst Ryan’s TDY, I just haven’t had the time or inclination to sit down and write. But, here I am – just in time for Currently: May in Alaska in which we’re sharing five things we’re currently doing.

Currently: May in Alaska

Loving // I’m loving the absolute whiplash that is “spring” in Fairbanks, Alaska. I’m kidding. I don’t love it. I do, however, love these bright, sunny, and downright warm days that seem to be getting more and more frequent. We had a weekend of 60+ degree weather, and it was heaven. We finally set up our deck furniture that’s been in long-term storage since we left Washington in 2021, and we got a grill for the first time in two years. It was heaven, and I can’t wait for Ryan to get home to enjoy it with us.

Reading // When Ryan’s home, he usually reads to the kids before bed every evening. Since he’s been gone for five weeks, however, I’ve taken over those duties, as well, so my personal reading has kind of gone on the backburner for the time being. The boys and I are slowly making our way through the Harry Potter series together, and if you know me and my love of Harry Potter, it feels kind of like passing the proverbial torch. They’re really loving it!

Enjoying // Since the kids’ jiujitsu competition last month, the boys have gotten back to training, and Mieke is on the mat again, too (and loving it!). Surprise though…I’ve started jiujitsu, too! I’ve been watching Ryan do it for years, and since we’re there five days a week, it felt silly not to try it out for myself…and I actually really enjoy it. Am I good? No. Do I enjoy it though? Heck yes!

Seeing // Fairbanks officially announced “green up” this past weekend, and I totally called it! For those unfamiliar, “green up” is declared with the trees’ leaves burst forth and the brown cast of winter gives way to green. I’m seeing all those signs of spring lately (even if it did snow on Monday), and with this spring weather comes the start of the Farmer’s Market next week and all sorts of fun spring and summer events coming our way.

Wanting // I want to learn the art of patience. I am the most impatient person you will ever meet. I mentioned in my last post that we were waiting on some big moves we made recently. We heard some great news, but I’m not quite ready to share any of it yet. So, in the meantime, I’m chasing down the things I actually have some control over…like getting a fully-remote job again. My photography hasn’t thrived here, and with things heading the way they are, I’ve been wanting to work again for the duration of our time in Alaska. So, color me impatient, because so many things take soooo long.

I had to laugh when I looked back at the blog over this past year because it’s really run the gamut of emotions. It’s been snowing since October, so if you add it up, we’ve had snow for eight months. The snow melted almost immediately this week, but goodness, it was an emotional kick in the pants. I’m ready for spring, and I’m excited for summer, and I’m hopeful for so many good things ahead as we creep towards the one-year mark of living in interior Alaska.

Tell me – what are you loving, enjoying, reading, seeing, and wanting this month?
