Do you like baseball? No? Me either! But, let’s be honest here; this post is less about the sport of baseball, itself, and far more about the experience of attending the 2024 Midnight Sun baseball game in Fairbanks, Alaska. I know what you’re thinking. That’s far too late, right? I mean, yes. You’re not wrong. I love sleep more than anything, but we live in the land of the Midnight Sun for a couple years only, and we’re determined to make the most of it (even with all the challenges we’ve faced living here). So, we went…and it was an experience we won’t soon forget.

All About the Midnight Sun Baseball Game

If you’ve never heard about the Midnight Sun Game, you’re probably wondering what the heck I’m talking about, so I’ll start off with a little backstory, if you will. Essentially, the Midnight Sun Game is an amateur baseball game that’s held every year on the summer solstice at Fairbanks’ Growden Memorial Park. The game starts at about 10 PM and runs until about 1:30 AM the next morning…and the sun never truly sets.

The Midnight Sun Game is hosted by the Alaska Goldpanners, which is a collegiate summer baseball team based right here in Fairbanks, Alaska. Their opponents change up year by year, since the Goldpanners are, quite literally, in a league of their own, so their opponents are selected from other similar summer collegiate teams based out of the lower 48. This year, the Goldpanners were up against the Seattle Studs.

The 2024 Midnight Sun Baseball Game

It must be said that we almost didn’t go to the game due to my aforementioned love of sleep. However, the reality that every duty station is fleeting and opportunities like these don’t come every day won out in the end. We bought general admission tickets, and we were advised to get there nice and early, so we did. We arrived with lawn chairs in tow at 8 PM (yes, two hours before the game started), and we found a spot way out towards the outfield.

There are general admission bleachers, but we opted for lawn chairs for the flexibility of movement with the kids, a better view overall and, of course, comfort. We ended up actually staring into the slow-setting sun for much of the game, but we loved where we sat for the convenience of it. We had a great view of warmups, and one of our friends’ daughters was actually given a game ball, too.

Our Favorites from the Midnight Sun Game

Right at the start of the event and toward the tail end of the national anthem, USAF does a flyover with four jets, and if you ask my kids (and me, really), that was one of the coolest parts! It’s also slightly funny that this event is so quintessentially Fairbanks that it warrants a flyover. It’s a whole thing, and it doesn’t matter how many times we see these, it’s always cool.

Like I said though, we’re not a baseball family. We love a good hockey game, but baseball isn’t always our jam. This seemed to be less about the baseball though and far more about the solstice and the tradition of a game with no artificial lighting on the longest day of the year. That, in and of itself, was so neat. Ultimately, after a slow start, the Goldpanners took home the W, winning 10-4.

Tips for Going to the Midnight Sun Baseball Game

Address: 207 Wilbur Street, Fairbanks, Alaska

Date: The event is held on the summer solstice every year. This year, that was Friday, June 21st. Next year, and don’t quote me on this, but it should be June 20, 2025.

Tickets: There are several tiers of tickets, and the reserved seats sell out fast (like within the first day or two). Those tickets went on sale November 2023 and the highest-tier tickets were $75/ticket. General admission tickets take longer to sell out but they did completely sell out this year. GA tickets were $25 apiece and additional tickets are sold at the gate if still available.

Pro-Tip: Do not do will-call for your tickets. Have them mailed to you, or pick them up at the box office prior to game-day. The will-call line was literally hours long, while we breezed through to stake out our spot right when the doors opened.
