Two posts in one week! What is this world coming to?! Maybe it’s the sunlight boosting my productivity these days, or maybe it’s just the fact that we’ve turned a corner on a lot of things we’ve faced as a family this year. Whatever it is, we’re feeling a little renewed lately – enough so that I clearly have time to post twice in one week. It’s time for Currently: June in Alaska, in which we share three things we’re currently doing, and let me just say….summer has us doing all the things.

Currently: June in Alaska

Loving // This sunshine is wild. We went from barely any daylight this winter to all the daylight this summer. Summer is so short in interior Alaska, but it’s so sweet, and I’m grateful for these long days enabling us to soak up every single second of it. We’ve enjoyed late night ice cream parties, water fights into the wee hours, and we’ve hiked a bit already, too. Ryan just left for another TDY, but we’re loving all the adventures we have planned this summer and all the fun times we’ve had thus far with good friends.

Seeing // It’s PCS season for the military again. For those unfamiliar, a PCS is a permanent change of station, which is always a bit laughable because nothing about the military is permanent. Nevertheless, it’s PCS season, and we’re watching our little neighborhood here on Fort Wainwright empty out. In fact, only four families in our cul-de-sac will remain this summer; five are moving on our side, alone, and two are already gone. We’re grateful we have our friends with us for the duration of our time in Alaska.

Looking Forward to // We’re rapidly approaching the summer solstice, which is the longest day of the year. We bought tickets to the Midnight Sun baseball game, and we’re getting ready for a seriously epic Fourth of July celebration next month. Fun fact though; there are no fireworks in Alaska on the 4th because there is too much sun. Chew on that one for a moment.

Thinking About // These past six months have been a wild ride. We made some big career/family moves that we’ll share soon(ish)…when we’re ready…and we also made the choice for me to go back to work. The job market is wild though and, after sending out nearly 150 applications, I threw out a Hail Mary on Facebook to my network asking if anyone had a line on jobs. An old coworker reached out, and within a week, I had an offer for literally the perfect fit at a company I worked with nearly 14 years ago. I am so grateful for how beautifully things have worked out.

Lounging Around in // Y’all. Shorts. Lots of shorts. Alaska has ruined us. 60F feels like 90F, and 70F feels like the surface of the sun. It’s such a state of extremes, but we’re loving this absolute polar opposite of the winter months in Fairbanks. I know summer won’t last, so we’re lounging around in swimsuits and shorts and loving every second.

June in Alaska marks 11 months of living in the interior. I won’t lie; it’s been hard. We’ve faced challenges here that we’ve never faced before, and we’ve had to sort of change our perspective (and our focus) to continue making this most of our time here. I feel like we’re finally getting our proverbial sea legs though, and even though Ryan’s schedule is wild, the kids are so busy with sports, and I’m about to re-enter the work force, I’m so ready to see what’s next.

Tell me – what are you loving, seeing, looking forward to, thinking about, and lounging around in this month?
