Happy July, my friends! We’re officially over halfway through 2024. Isn’t that wild? I swear this has simultaneously been the longest and shortest year of my life. But, here we are. We’re going to hit the one-year mark in Alaska this month, and we have big things coming on the horizon for us soon. For now though, it’s time for Currently: July in Alaska, in which we share five things we’re currently doing during this summer in interior Alaska.

Currently: July in Alaska

Loving // I’m absolutely loving these long days right now. I will admit though; I can understand why people crave darkness after so much light. I think that by the time we reach midwinter’s darkest days though, I’ll be ready for long summer days again. I don’t know that I’d ever quite be able to get used to these extremes, but they’re beautiful for now! We play outside until past 9 PM every night, and it’s always looking like 4 PM.

Looking Forward to // We booked our big Alaska bucket list trips for the very beginning of August, and we’re so excited. We’ll be heading down to Valdez to go camping and salmon fishing, and I’m so excited to see another corner of Alaska with my favorite people. Other things we’re looking forward to are our first visitors! Ryan’s younger brother is coming next week, and my aunt will be here at the end of the month! I’m also looking forward to (hopefully) better air this next month because it’s been bad.

Savoring // Ryan is on block leave right now, which means we actually have some extended and uninterrupted time with him for a change. After four TDYs in six months, we’re loving it. He’s gearing up for a busy latter half of the year with more TDYs and a lot of field exercises, so having this time together has been great.

Celebrating // We’re thinking of heading south a little to celebrate the 4th of July tomorrow. I didn’t realize that Alaskans don’t really do fireworks for the 4th because it’s too light out to see them. We’re excited to celebrate the 4th in a little local town though. I think it’ll be so much fun.

Remembering // Last summer, we celebrated the 4th of July in Gas City, Indiana whilst on our trip from New Hampshire to Alaska. So much has happened between then and now, but that was such a fun evening in a little town in the middle of the US.

July in Alaska has been one to remember. There are big things coming down the line for us, but for now, we’re soaking up every ounce of summer in the interior that we can. We made the decision to send the kids back to school this coming year (more on that later), I started working last month, and we’re staying busy with the kids’ sports schedule, but changes are coming, and I can’t wait to see what’s next on the horizon.

Tell me – what are you loving, looking forward to, savoring, celebrating, and remembering this month?
