It’s August in Alaska and, once again, I’m a couple weeks for this month’s “Currently” post. Let’s just go ahead and assume I will always do this post later in the month, okay? August has been flying by, due in large part to the fact that Ryan’s been intermittently TDY and the kiddos started school again last week. It’s been a busy month of chaos and change, but it’s been a good month so far, and it feels like a good day to share what we’re currently doing during our final August in Alaska.
Currently: August 2024 in Alaska
Loving // August is usually a month of big changes, and this year is no exception. I’m loving seeing the kids’ excitement over going to school this year. I don’t know if we’ll stay in public school after this year, but it feels like the right fit – at least for now. Winter in Alaska is so long, and my little social butterflies are thriving with the new daily routine thus far. I’m hoping it sticks!
Looking Forward to // We have our first long weekend from school coming up, and I am so ready. School has been a huge adjustment, and they love it as a whole, but I don’t know if it’ll be a forever thing. I miss the slower pace of having them home and knowing where they are in their studies.

Dreading // It deserves a whole post on its own, but if you follow me on instagram, you’ve likely seen our absolute cluster with our home here on Fort Wainwright. I’m doing my best not to go full nuclear right now on here, but we’ve just been up against it lately. Long story short, the boys’ room had mold in it (though they refuse to test it), and the process of fixing that and a roof/ceiling leak is unacceptable. They want us to switch neighborhoods, and we’re not down. More to come on that, but I’m consistently dreading having to deal with it every day we get up.
Buying // We bought tickets home to New Hampshire for Christmas, and that was our biggest purchase in a minute. We actually got a really “good” rate per ticket, and we didn’t want to wait because we just know the ticket prices will go up. Since we’re PCSing again next summer, it felt like the right thing to do – heading home to see family since we don’t yet know what’s next.

Getting Ready for // Y’all, fall is hitting us like a ton of bricks. After one last warm weekend, it’s 40F this morning, and our high is about 53F this week. I expect winter will hit faster and harder than last year, as well, which means we’ll be celebrate our final winter in Alaska in style. The leaves are changing, the days are crisp, and it’s almost lovely…except that it’s the middle of August, and it’s fall. Here we go!
Honestly, August 2024 in Alaska is like the closing of a chapter because everything was so new during our last August in Alaska. We’re set to PCS in July of next year which, right now, feels like it can’t come soon enough – but that’s mostly because of the absolute dumpster fire that is our housing situation right now. We have incredible friends here, and we’ve enjoyed our time as a whole. Right now though…phew. August 2024 in Alaska is a bit of a doozy. Cheers to September?!
