Two posts in two days. What?! I think it’s that mad rush to the end of the year that has me actually getting a post done on the day it’s planned. That, or I’m up stupid early to work, and the house is quiet…or both. Either way, I’m actually doing Currently: December 2024 in Alaska on the day it’s meant to be done for the first time since we got to Alaska, so that’s a feat in and of itself. This month, we’re sharing what we’re currently loving, looking forward to, buying, hoping for, and baking.
Currently: December 2024 in Alaska
Loving // I’m absolutely loving our new homeschool routine. Though we absolutely have our frustrations on a daily basis, the kids are doing so much better with sleeping later, working in pockets of time, and being more productive overall. In turn, I’m also more productive in my early mornings before the kids get up, and I get a solid chunk of work done before the day even truly starts. I’m glad that – even with all the challenges – that we made the switch.

Looking Forward to // We’re heading to New Hampshire in less than two weeks, and I am so excited. People talk about island fever in Hawaii, but they don’t mention that interior Alaska can feel almost just as isolating. The interior is beautiful, but we are so far removed from other areas of the state, and travel is so expensive. This is actually the first time the kids are leaving Alaska since we first arrived 18 months ago. To say they’re ready to travel again would be an understatement.
Buying // We bought a few things during the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales, but we tried to keep it to a minimum because we don’t want to clutter our home before PCSing this coming summer. I bought a new crockpot because mine cracked randomly, and we did buy new luggage from Monos, which we’re having delivered to NH because shipping to AK was astronomical.
Hoping for // I’m hoping for an RFO sooner than later! For those unfamiliar, an RFO is a request for orders. While we have a good idea where we’re going next, nothing is set in stone until that RFO comes through. And yes, even with an RFO, it can change, but it’s a good indicator that it’s going to happen. Historically, we’ve found out mid-January. I’m secretly (not-so-secretly) hoping it’ll be sooner this time.

Baking // I’m getting ready to bake Spencer’s birthday cake! It’s his 10th birthday today, and this mama is in her feels. 10 years of Spencer Bruce. I know they say time flies, and they aren’t lying. I hardly feel old enough to have a 10-year-old, but here we are, and we love him so much!
Currently, December in Alaska is cold and dark, but we’re enjoying this slower season after the mad rush of soaking up all the sun in the summer. We’re excited for travels in the months ahead, and we’re so looking forward to hearing where we’re moving next. But first, we can’t wait to soak up the season in all its glory with family.
